VOLUNTEERISM PROGRAMS and OPPORTUNITIES
Good stewardship is vitally important for our environment as well as for the future of our parks and recreation system. By volunteering, people make a “Major” contribution toward the beautification of our community’s scenic and natural resources. The Parks Department is continually striving to expand its volunteer initiatives in order to effectively enhance the Department’s programs and services to the community, while also affording citizens and groups the opportunity to contribute directly to their community. The Sapulpa Park Department extends invitations to individuals, civic clubs, schools, groups, businesses, or organizations, to participate in this worthwhile and beneficial community service program.
The Department encourages citizens to take a vital ownership mentality concerning Sapulpa’s parks and recreation facilities and programs. The Parks Department continues its efforts to expand volunteer initiatives in order to effectively enhance the Department’s programs and services provided to the community, while also affording citizens and group the opportunity to make direct contributions to their community.
Numerous volunteer opportunities are available for interested citizens to get involved in helping with a variety of fun and “community-changing” projects. Good stewardship is vitally important for our environment, for the future of our parks and recreation system, and its facilities, fishing, camping and other nature activities within our community.
Some of those volunteer opportunities include but are not limited to; recreation programs and festivals, youth sports coaches, adopt-a-park activities for groups and individuals, citizen boards (parks and recreation advisory board, senior citizens advisory board, Booker T. Washington Recreation Center advisory board, youth sports council, and teen council.)
1. RECREATION PROGRAMS AND FESTIVALS
The Sapulpa Parks and Recreation Department offers a large variety of volunteer opportunities for the community to get involved in local recreation activities, special events, and festivals sponsored by the Department. Some of those activities include holiday workshops, Easter egg hunts, jazz festival, freedom festival, fishing derbies, etc.
The Sapulpa Parks and Recreation Department provides and coordinates community service opportunities for its youth sports programs, which includes; basketball, tackle and flag football, baseball, softball, and soccer. All youth sports coaches are trained in their roles and responsibilities. Parents also complete an orientation program to understand the important impact sports has on their child’s development The National Standards For Youth Sports are used as a guide for operating youth sports programs.
3. ADOPT-A-PARK PROGRAM
The Park Department organized and implemented an Adopt-A-Park Program in 1994 whereby individuals, civic clubs, and other organizations have the opportunity to provide volunteer service for their community by adopting a certain park area(s). The Park Department has worked very hard to encourage and develop good working relationships with community and neighborhood groups. Numerous volunteer opportunities were made available to interested citizens and groups to get involved in helping with a variety of fun and “community-changing” projects. The Sapulpa Parks and Recreation Board, all volunteers- appointed by the Mayor, advised and assisted the Parks Department in planning and development of the city’s park and recreation system.

B. Sapulpa Park Friends Foundation Board
The Sapulpa Park Friends Board and Trustees manage the overall operations of the Park Friends Foundation. The Administrative Section provides supportive efforts as needed for the Foundation as well as for the Sapulpa Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, the Sapulpa Youth Sports Council, Senior Citizens Advisory Board, and a variety of other committees, boards, agencies, organizations, and special interest groups both public and private within and outside the Sapulpa community.
B. Senior Citizens Advisory Board also assists the Department in addressing the needs of the older adult population.
C. Youth Sports Council is comprised of the presidents of Sapulpa’s Little League Baseball Association, Girls Softball Association, Youth Soccer Association, and Little Chiefs Football Association and assists the Department with its new background check program, the training and certification of its youth coaches, needs assessments and coordination efforts related to meeting the needs of the Community’s youth sports programs and population participants, as well as facility needs.
D. The Booker T. Washington Recreation Center Advisory Board – advisory board comprised of volunteer citizen advocates working with Recreation Staff to improve and develop programs at the Booker T. Washington Recreation Center. Programs include sports and cultural activities for all ages, designed to meet the needs of the Sapulpa community.
E. Teen Council – New board under planning and formation stages will provide involvement and citizenship opportunities for Sapulpa’s youth.
F. Junior Counselor Program- New board under planning and formation stages will provide citizenship opportunities for Sapulpa’s youth.
