In August 1988, a full time Director was hired and charged with planning and assembling the City’s first comprehensive parks and recreation department. There were no City sponsored recreation programs at this time. Initially, the Cemetary Division was assigned to provide maintenance support services to the Director as per his development plans for repairs and improvements to the existing City park and recreation facilities.
A major “hit list” was developed cataloging all of the safety hazards and other serious repair problems and maintenance needs requiring immediate attention. Since then the City of Sapulpa’s Park and Recreation system has undergone many positive changes and has been significantly upgraded across the board through out the entire City since that time.
“For 40 years, the National Recreation and Park Association has advocated the importance of thriving, local park systems, the opportunity for all Americans to lead healthy, active lifestyles, and the preservation of great community places. A strong park and recreation system is essential for a thriving community, and when citizens get involved with their local parks and recreation system, their quality of life improves. Our investment in parks and recreation programs and facilities should reflect their importance to our community. Our health, our community, our economy and our environment all benefit from investments in parks and recreation opportunities, enriching human and natural resources.” - National Recreation & Park Association (NRPA)
The Sapulpa Parks and Recreation Department has been closely associated with ORPS since 1988.
